When it comes to cancer, listen carefully for quacks

Re: “The cruelty of the cancer industry”, Have Your Say, June 15.

Once again Thomas Turk expects us to believe something is true because he says so. He writes about a series of “cancer cures” which he admits have never been published in medical journals.
If he’s such a believer in alternative treatments, why doesn’t he mention that Dr Dean Ornish – whose studies actually have been published in medical journals! – was able to halt the progress of prostate cancer by putting patients on a low-fat vegan diet? Is it because Turk knows that this study disproves everything he’s been writing about healthy diets for the last several decades?
He also claimed that an alternative therapy cured Ronald Reagan of lung cancer. When I googled “Ronald Reagan lung cancer”, I found no evidence that he had ever had it in the first place.
When you have people like Turk writing nonsense such as that whole grains causes obesity, what’s to stop Dr X from claiming that whole grains cause cancer and that all you have to do to be cured is to stop eating them? It’s precisely because of people like Thomas Turk that we have to be extremely careful about whom we get our medical information from.
