‘Our civilisation’ belongs to every person who assimilates

“Who controls the past controls the future, and who controls the present controls the past”, George Orwell.
“Our civilisation”, to which President Trump referred in Poland, is Western civilisation that is built on the past. It has been evolving and developing ever since we learnt to walk erect on two legs. It is the civilisation of the developed world, in which each individual has freedom of expression, and each nation state has democratic sovereignty. Any threat to our history is a threat to our future. Our past is who we are and assures our future. It is vital we control the present.
Our civilisation is clearly valued by people from the developing world. It’s protective umbrella and privileges are sought-after by those suffering totalitarian and fascist oppression. Millions are risking their lives and those of their families to find the humanity offered by our civilisation. Meanwhile we might ask ourselves, how many migrants from Western civilisation are risking their lives to get into Somalia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq or Iran and similar countries? 
Any totalitarian, fascist ideology suppresses individual liberty, denying human development and causing bigotry. “Our civilisation” allows freedom of expression to all, regardless of race, religion, colour or ethnicity. It’s called democracy. 
Our Western civilisation embraces everybody who understands and respects its evolved principles. Like democracy itself, it’s not perfect, but it’s the best we have. It is up to the individual whether they choose to assimilate or not. But those who do so have a duty to defend it, otherwise it will be gone, and gone forever.
