Seacon Bangkae and Muangthai Life Insurance recreate the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Rattanakosin in the festival “Bangkok in 1982” running from August 11 to 20 at the shopping mall’s Centre Court.

The event will recreate the era’s important landmarks, which no longer exist, such as the Sanam Luang flea market, which was very popular in the old days. Back then, people would gather every Saturday and Sunday to buy and sell bits and bobs, a little like Chatuchak Weekend Market today. The real charm of the Saman Luang flea market was “bae-ga-din”, where vendors put their items for sale on the ground.
Another old landmark the Sala Chalerm Thai Theatre, located on the corner of Ratchadamnoen Klang and Mahachai roads, which was constructed at the initiative of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram. Thai Daimaru Department Store was also another landmark and remains a fixture in the memories of teenagers back then because it was Thailand’s very first department store that imported products from Japan. It was also the first Thailand mall to install escalators.
Lolita Nightclub of Bangkok was the capital’s first nightclub, where singers and bands performed for “partners” to show off their dance moves. Sam Tahan Gas Station was Thailand’s first petrol station, before transforming to the PTT petrol station it is today. The Old Lottery Office building housed the Government Lottery Office, which mainly managed and issued national lottery tickets. The old Thai Airways office building was the company’s very first office location. Other buildings include Mackenna Theatre, a popular cinema house, and Sala Foremost, the famous ice-cream shop.
Another important venue was Lok Dontree Stage, where one of the most popular TV programmes of the era was filmed every weekend. The stage regularly invited famous bands and singers to perform. The mall is recreating the Lok Dontree Stage and will invite singers and bands to perform hits songs of 1982.
Kaleidoscope will take the stage on August 11, followed by AC 93 and Vertigo on August 12. The Betters and Chaba Big Band will perform on August 13 and Hard Boy on August 18. Narathip Kanchanawat, lead singer and leader of Chatree band and Ronnachai Thomyapariwat, lead singer of Kiriboon, will entertain visitors on August 19 and 20 respectively.
Moreover, there will be an exhibition telling stories of Bangkok in 1982, when the capital city celebrated the 200th anniversary of Rattanakosin. Customers will have a chance to experience Thai people’s lifestyle in that era through electrical appliances, consumer goods, electronic devices such as IBM 3522 personal computers, Soundabout portable audio cassette/tape players, film cameras, Family game consoles, large cell phones, radio cassette players, vintage television sets, Pagers, video players and videotapes, Olympia typewriters and much more.
