Food on the mind

Food on the mind

The River City Film Club is back with weekly screenings from the beginning of next month and kicks off its new season with the German film “Soul Kitchen” on September 2 at 3pm in Room 201 of River City Bangkok .

Directed by Fatih Akin, the film has won awards at the Venice and Toronto film festivals and combines food, music and charismatic characters in a story that’s studded with action, passion and tension. The film centres on Zinos, a German of Greek descent, who runs a homely restaurant in a warehouse. His clientele falls off when he hires a gourmet cook but picks up again when his jail bird-brother Ilias takes on deejaying duties. In order to continue his love-affair with his journalist girlfriend Nadine who has moved to Shanghai, Zinos hands over the restaurant to his brother, with disastrous results.
Akin is of Turkish origin and is noted for his multi-cultural themes and characters, including in his earlier serious dramas “Head On”, “Edge of Heaven” which won him awards and acclaim.
The film is supported by the Goethe-Institut Thailand and German Embassy who will serve snacks and drinks after the screening.
Ambassador Peter Prugel will introduce the movie and Maren Niemeyer, director of the Goethe-Institut Thailand , will propose the vote of thanks. Admission is free.
