The editorial states that, “An unwanted spotlight is shining once again on the Army’s Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani following the second death there of a young soldier in four months.”
Respectfully, it is a very wanted spotlight.
The deaths of two soldiers in generally similar circumstances in a four-month period should not only have alarm bells ringing, there should be blaring sirens and an in-depth investigation.
These cases cry out for an outside investigation, but unfortunately it will not happen.
The Army continues to operate outside the bounds of legal responsibility, and this will haunt Thailand for a long, long time.
A country cannot function when a state entity operates under its own rules. The example of neighbouring Burma should be a clear warning of what happens when the military isn’t governed the same way as everyone else.
