Let’s be done with nuclear weapons

The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is laudable and, some may say, timely.

I applaud this as I don’t like nuclear weapons; I never have, and I never will.
We have Donald “fire and fury”, “calm before the storm” Trump having access to US nuclear codes, alongside that other pyromaniac in Pyongyang threatening to immolate America and elsewhere with his phallic delivery vehicles topped with, if you believe the “expert” news, thermonuclear warheads.
However I agree with the logic of realpolitik that the scientific genie is well and truly out of the bottle, and we can’t uninvent the technology.
That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t at least try to get rid of these disgusting weapons platforms. Until we do, the dangers of proliferation add more members to the so-called “nuclear club”.
Some scholars have argued that more may be better, due in part to the apparent logic of MAD theory, but I for one am not so sure. We have at least two certifiable crackpots capering and gesticulating on the world stage already, and there’s always the possibility of more being out there.
