Junta’s hunt for Yingluck is just for show

Re: “Normal UK immigration rules for Yingluck: Don”, The Nation, yesterday.

Talk about a witch-hunt! Obviously someone has it in for the Shins! Meanwhile there are Thai murderers, money embezzlers and monks hiding overseas.

I knew she would never, ever apply for political asylum. Ultra-rich Asians just don’t roll like that. Investor-type visas and/or second nationalities are the way to go for them.

Now let’s hear what Britain has to say. This Thai government has a reputation for making statements for others. At the moment it’s just manure being fed to the mushrooms.

The Nation: “A source from Pheu Thai Party said it was believed that Yingluck had sought asylum in several countries. In a worst-case scenario for her, she could stay in Dubai with her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, the source said.”
Does her brother have asylum anywhere? If not, why is this even an issue? Neither he or she will ever be extradited, from anywhere.

The Nation: “Wherever Yingluck is located, the host country should confirm her whereabouts to Thailand so official procedures could be carried out, Prayut said, apparently referring to extradition efforts by authorities.”
Why? Just because the Thai government happily treats foreigners poorly does not mean other governments must do the same. The rights of a Thai national overseas who behaves lawfully are no business of the Thai government. Thai law does not have any influence in foreign countries. “Should”? Why?

The Thai military needs to wake up. No Western country is going to tell them anything, and I also miss this urgency in the case of Mr Red Bull.
