When a grieving widow encountered a graceless president

Re: “How to console the bereaved, Trump-style”, Opinion, November 1.

S Tsow described perfectly how Donald Trump might have expressed his condolences had he been witness to the deaths of historical figures like Jesus, Lincoln and JFK.
President Trump should know that consoling a military serviceman’s bereaved family is a tough nut for any president. Sensitivity is of the utmost importance here.
In the case of Sergeant La David Johnson’s death, Trump made a phone call to the US soldier’s widow, who later revealed he told her that her husband “knew what he signed up for”. She also said Trump could barely recall her husband’s name, and that the phone call had only added to her grief.
Trump should have known that if saying “sorry” one time for a gaffe is not enough, you should say it again. What you should not do is try to defend your original mistake.
And if you have never apologised before – learn to do it.
