Ye Olde Theologian attempts a solution to the puzzle of God’s command prohibiting His creation from eating the fruit of knowledge – after which things went, err, pear-shaped, if one excuses the pun. This is in reference to Pope Francis’s comment regarding the incident in the Garden of Eden – Eve being fooled by the serpent’s “fake news”.
Firstly, there is no reference in Genesis to covering up genitalia after eating the fruit, so the story is not really in opposition to sexual activity in any way. The original Hebrew text simply refers to covering up the nakedness of the whole body, initially with fig leaves.
Why the Tree of Knowledge? Good question. Because all relationships have boundaries which are not supposed to be crossed.
So, does any of this make God a liar? Not at all: he told the whole truth whereas the serpent still tells his fibs to this day – always making sure to include a little bit of truth, but spinning it so that the result is deception. He told the first couple they could be like God, but not die, which is the huge porkie. And the world has not changed. We are still rebelling in line with Eden’s original revolt.
Alternatively, if one dislikes the Bible’s explanation of our conundrum, we are simply ape-like creatures killing each other with gay abandon. Now that’s the fake news!
