Asian powers no better

In his letter of February 16, Alf Haupt asks us to imagine a world led by Russia or China as an alternative to the USA.

As an answer to that, I would suggest we would see very little change as all three appear to be aggressive, repressive countries determined to fight for their perceived status as “top dog” and waste their countries’ resources on arms that could well render the world disabled. The citizens of Syria and Afghanistan would surely have lots to tell us about the “help and kindness” they have received from two of these big three countries and many more Third World nations in Central America and Africa could add further chapters.
Many of their own citizens could have benefited from education, health and housing programmes if only the government hadn’t wasted massive money on waging wars overseas or building atomic bombs never to be used. I would suggest it would be far better to be led by such great nations as Denmark, Iceland or Norway who care about the welfare of their own people and take serious steps to reduce harm to the only planet we have to live on. Countries that don’t imprison or execute huge numbers of their own citizens and who stopped invading other countries a long time back. Peaceful rather than powerful suits me just fine.
