A double-agent makes lots of enemies

Re: “EU and US were sceptical too – until they sniffed the evidence”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

Robin Grant, with his usual eloquence, assures us that the Salisbury attack was “clearly part of Russia’s strategy of seeking to sow confusion and division among the Western democracies”.
Okay! So this long established group of highly experienced espionage and internationally recognised exponents of “dirty tricks” set up a distinctly amateurish scheme, using materials that were conspicuously unfit for the task, to brutally but unsuccessfully eliminate an ex-defector who had already been tried, sentenced and punished in Russia and had been instrumental in allowing them to enable the return to Russia of several of their own citizens, a significantly useful procedure that will unquestionably be denied them in future!
As well as (I almost forgot) leaving a trail a mile wide so that the whole world would be aware that they were the culprits.
As I understand it, nobody is directly accusing the British prime minister of being involved in this heinous crime – she was raised in a vicarage and demonstrably has neither the gall nor the guile necessary. But she has, unarguably, been a beneficiary and has unsurprisingly welcomed the opportunity with open arms.
As for the support from the EU and the US which Mr Grant cites as evidence that the Russians were responsible, I believe that a much more likely explanation is that they desperately needed an excuse to “clear out” their embassies of undesirables suspected of subterfuge and also welcomed the opportunity!
As for the question of who, more realistically, might have carried out the Salisbury attack, let us consider a more likely scenario.
The intended victim, as we are aware, lived his adult life in the twilight world of espionage, counter-espionage, and assistance in assassinations. When he defected to British Intelligence, he betrayed countless fellow operatives all over the world, most of whom were arrested and severely punished, and therefore would have had the wherewithal and the motive to seek revenge. After all, in our so-called democratic societies, how are we able to accuse, convict or punish any person or institution on the grounds that they were “most likely” to have committed a crime?
We can rest assured that had Mrs May have been in possession of “compelling information”, we would most assuredly all have been made aware of it. Her outspoken henchman, Boris Johnson, would have made damned sure of that!
