How disappointing it was to read Dr Frank’s answer to Steve K’s letter on the reason the FBI chief was fired. Instead of offering the facts behind James Comey’s demise, Dr Frank said Steve K’s letter had “gravitas” – even when it showed a delusional grip of the facts, based on, I have to assume, one source of news only: the despicable, well-documented liar Sean Hannity of Fox News.
The fact is that Comey was not fired because of his declaration that the Hillary Clinton email saga was not a criminal case (it was a molehill blown up to Mount Everest; her Republican predecessors also used private email). Based on Trump’s own words in interviews and tweets, Comey was fired because he did not halt the investigation into possible collusion between Trump and the Russians. Moreover Comey did not have the power to prevent a prosecutor taking up the Clinton email case, but no prosecutor came forward as there was no basis to prosecute. That this simple and well-reported fact was spun into a lie to defend the firing of Comey astonishes me.
Steve K conveniently forgot to mention that Comey, as a registered Republican, helped Trump to win the election by telling the American people that the FBI had reopened the investigation into the email saga just days before the election, while not informing the people that Trump was also under investigation! This help was much appreciated by Trump, who tweeted his admiration for Comey’s “courage”.
Steve K is using a page out of the pathological liar’s playbook – more than 2,000 lies documented in Trump’s first year as president – by stating the FBI was politicised under President Obama. The truth is that Trump started this politicising by firing FBI personnel who refused to swear personal loyalty to him or stop the collusion investigation.
