You don’t criticise your host’s house

Re: “Many letter writers ignore issues that are relevant to Thailand”, Have Your Say, May 8.

There is good reason why this is the case. Whenever expats say anything critical about the country, Thais become very sensitive and angry, basically saying, “What do you know?” Most Thais only want to hear good things about their country. When you tell them what they want to hear, they smile and are very thankful, but when you don’t, watch out.
Hence, in order to avoid offending Thais, most seasoned veterans here have learned to stay out of Thai affairs, and usually only comment on issues of general interest.
