Latest ‘great leap forward’ is just more Maoist propaganda

Re: “Shameless farang still praising colonial thuggery”, Have Your Say, March 1.

Sometimes, the Letters column of this newspaper is so defaced with cynical evasion that even I am moved to rub my eyes, blink, read again, and wonder if some mountebank has laced my Earl Grey with liberty cap mushrooms, jam-packed with psilocybin.
Thus it is with the fopdoodle Prasan Stianrapapongs’ ill-disciplined, hysterical, hypocritical, meandering rant. Such naked revisionism is worthy of Mao himself, much in line with the tyrant’s stern lecturing of the Soviet Union, and which created a seismic fissure in the Communist world.
Leaving aside the hissy-fit venom he directs at the Western world, this contributor boasts such splendid new Chinese technological marvels as a high-speed rail network – a British invention. A space station – thanks to Western technology and the German scientist Werner von Braun. And the “fastest computer in the world”; oh, dear, we nasty inventive foreigners, at it again. Are you reading this, Silicon Valley?
This aforementioned technology is apparently used to “monitor” (code for spy on and apprehend without due process) so-called “bad guys”. (Further code for anyone with the cojones to speak out against transparent oppression.) By this warped apologistic reasoning, most of the ills that the flesh is heir too may be laid firmly at the door of “colonisers”. Given the glaringly thuggish behaviour practised by the euphemistically termed “cultural” revolution, brutish imitation is, truly, the sincerest form of flattery.
To compound this sorry fulmination, our fanciful zoilist makes easy meat of the (admittedly disgusting) pederasts and other perverts in the clergy, while atheist Beijing has appointed “bishops [who] have never molested any children”. Irrefutable proof to this end will doubtless follow in any subsequently vapid, Huxleysque contribution by this writer.
To conclude, for now: the trip-taker Stianrapapongs’ crude attempt at what the Germans term “umleitung” informs us that “colonialism is thuggery not contribution”. Quite; I believe that the Tibetan people might agree with that, not to mention citizens of the aspiring democracy across the Taiwan Strait.
