A veteran of the Tiananmen Square democracy uprising, Liu Xiabo was serving his fourth prison sentence, for 11 years, when he became the first and so far only Chinese national to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The committee cited “his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”.
Unfortunately since the 1989 struggle for freedom and despite the sacrifice of countless more activists, human rights are no closer to being realised in China; in fact progress has been reversed in many respects.
Prasan Stianrapapongs refers to the Chinese wholesale rape and destruction of Tibet – one of the greatest spiritual civilisations the world has ever known – as “reorganisation”. This happened in living memory and to some of the finest people I have ever met.
