The real key to a happy retirement

The real key to a happy retirement

Re: “Low envy is behind our high-minded criticism of billionaires”, Have Your Say, April 5.

Somsak Pola asks what I would do if I were a billionaire. My answer would be abandon most of my wealth so that my offspring can achieve success on their own. Instead of wealth, I would provide them with an education and life skills so they can plan their own future.
It would be unfortunate to have rich kids with big dreams but no brains and no sense of responsibility living among us – much less becoming our political leaders.
I used to work for one of Thailand’s richest men and after 10 years quit and started my own business – on a shoestring. Now that I have retired and given everything in my name to my only child, I think I’m happier than Mr Billionaire. Why? Because I knew when to quit, while Mr Billionaire is still working!
