Concerned about repeat of 1976 massacre? Then why support the military?

October, 1976 calls to mind the gruesome image of a dead body hanged from a tree as a man beats it with a folding chair, while a crowd looks on, some with grinning faces.
The photo is poignant, powerful and historically important and stands alongside other notorious images like the so-called “Saigon execution” and “Tank Man of Tiananmen Square”.
Vint Chavala tells us he was in Bangkok in 1976, but he doesn’t say which side he sympathises with (present tense stressed here). It isn’t too hard to guess, is it?
