The palace’s name, which literally means “far from worries”, was built by King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) in 1926 for his Queen, Rambhai Barni. As the palace’s name suggests, it served as a summer palace for the king and queen.
Klai Kangwon is now a summer residence of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and the Royal Family. One of the King’s most famous photos was taken during his stay at the palace – spending quality-time sailing his dinghy – one of his most favourite sports.
There is no doubt that the palace itself was designed to capture the best of this beautiful stretch of beach. Inspired by a Spanish architect, Klai Kangwon overlooks Hua Hin Beach with a dramatic ocean panorama. The palace grounds, including a beautiful botanical garden, feature a number of royal residences: Phra Tamnak Piamsuk; Phra Tamnak Noi; Phra Tamnak Plukkasem and Phra Tamnak Erb-prem Empree.
Hua Hin, with its picturesque seaside resort hotels, is one of Thailand’s most famous beach destinations; providing many weekenders – especially those from Bangkok – with an idyllic and easily accessible location for short breaks.
It wasn’t so long ago that Hua Hin was simply a tranquil fishing village – an attraction that caught the interest of Siam’s nobility and upper classes in the 1920s.
From time to time, the Thai Royal Family spends the hottest months of the year – usually March to April – in Hua Hin. His Majesty the King last visited Hua Hin and Klai Kangwon Palace four years ago.
Apart from serving His Majesty and members of the Royal Family, Klai Kangwon is also the pride of Hua Hin residents. It is, therefore, open to members of the public on a daily basis when the Royal Family is not in residence.
