Officials have warned locals against keeping suspicious packages containing methamphetamine that washed up on Ko Mak beach in Trat province.

Ko Kud Police Station in Trat was alerted to the suspicious packages washed up at Daeng Beach of Koh Mak on Sunday. They rushed to investigate and confirmed that they were methamphetamine. The 17 packages, each with a kilo of meth, were found scattered on the beach.

“We are investigating the origin of these drugs. We suspect that they could belong to the same lot found on Koh Samui beach in Surat Thani province last January,” said Pol Colonel Wichian Yantarat, deputy Trat police chief, said.

The 17 bags of methamphetamine had been found on a beach in Taling Ngam subdistrict of Koh Samui district on January 27.

Ko Kud district chief Somsak Juthawongsakul added that migrant workers who reside near the beach informed officials about the packages on Sunday.

“We are not sure if these are all of the drugs washed up on the beach,” he said. “Any locals who might have picked these packages must contact police officers immediately and must not keep them, as they are illegal narcotics with high penalty for possession.”

Ko Mak is one of Trat’s 66 islands in Gulf of Thailand located 35km from the mainland with 27 km of coastline.
