Bangkok on Saturday joined the global Earth Hour campaign by turning off lights for an hour.

Bangkok deputy governor Sopon Pisuttiwong presided over the ceremony at CentralWorld in Pathumwan district to launch the campaign along with 7,000 cities in 190 countries worldwide as part of 60+ Earth Hour 2021.

Lights were turned off from 8.30pm for an hour at the Emerald Buddha Temple and Grand Palace; Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn; Sao Ching Cha or the Giant Swing; Rama VIII Bridge; and the Golden Mount or Wat Saket.

Lights in Bangkok's 121 buildings and 100 roads were also turned off under the campaign.

Sopon said Bangkok had cooperated with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Thailand and several agencies to reduce carbon dioxide gas emission and electricity usage for 13 years.

"People can do their bit for the Earth by unplugging electric appliances and turning off lights that are not being used regularly," Sopon said.

Earth Hour was organised for the first time in Sydney by WWF Australia in 2007 to create awareness on using electricity efficiently among people in order to tackle the greenhouse effect.
