Heavy rain hits northern Thailand as monsoon trough lingers
Heavy rain is forecast across parts of Thailand on August 10, with storms covering 70% of the North and 60% of Bangkok and surrounding areas
Northern Thailand is forecast to face widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain on August 10 as a monsoon trough remains over the upper North and upper Laos, while Bangkok and surrounding provinces are expected to see rain across 60% of the area.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said heavy rain would persist in some parts of Thailand during the 24 hours from 6am on August 10 to 6am on August 11.
The conditions are being driven by the monsoon trough combined with a relatively strong south-west monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
People in affected areas have been advised to watch for heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall, which could trigger flash floods and run-off, particularly on foothills near waterways and in low-lying areas.
North and Northeast face widespread thunderstorms.
Regional forecast
- Bangkok and surrounding provinces: Thunderstorms across 60% of the area. Temperatures will range from 26–27°C to highs of 32–33°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–25 kilometres per hour.
- North: Thunderstorms across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Uttaradit, Tak, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 22–27°C to highs of 32–34°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–20km/h.
- Northeast: Thunderstorms across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Yasothon, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will range from 24–25°C to highs of 29–33°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–20km/h.
- Central region: Thunderstorms across 40% of the region, with heavy rain in Lop Buri, Saraburi and Kanchanaburi. Temperatures will range from 24–26°C to highs of 32–36°C, with south-westerly winds of 10–25km/h.
- East: Thunderstorms across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi and Trat. Temperatures will range from 24–26°C to highs of 31–33°C, with south-westerly winds of 20–40km/h.
- South, east coast: Thunderstorms across 30% of the region, mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon. Temperatures will range from 23–27°C to highs of 32–35°C, with south-westerly winds of 20–35km/h.
- South, west coast: Thunderstorms across 30% of the region, with heavy rain in Ranong and Phang Nga. Temperatures will range from 24–27°C to highs of 30–34°C.
Rough seas continue in upper Andaman and Gulf
Winds and waves remain relatively strong in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand, with waves of 2–3 metres and more than 3 metres during thunderstorms.
Mariners have been advised to navigate with caution and avoid areas affected by thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf should remain ashore.
In the East, waves are forecast at 2–3 metres, rising above 3 metres during thunderstorms.
Along the southern east coast, waves will be 1–2 metres, exceeding 2 metres offshore and during thunderstorms.
On the Andaman coast from Phuket northwards, south-westerly winds will reach 20–40km/h, with waves of 2–3 metres and more than 3 metres during thunderstorms.
From Krabi southwards, south-westerly winds will reach 20–35km/h. Waves will be about 2 metres, rising above 2 metres during thunderstorms.
