Heavy rain in Phuket triggers flood and landslide warnings

Thailand’s DDPM has issued Cell Broadcast alerts for Mueang Phuket and Thalang districts as heavy rain raises the risk of flash floods, landslides and river flooding.

  • Thailand's disaster agency has warned of possible flash floods and landslides in the Mueang Phuket and Thalang districts due to persistent heavy rain.
  • Residents in vulnerable, low-lying areas have been urged to move their belongings to higher ground and follow official announcements.
  • The warnings are being distributed to the public through Cell Broadcast alerts in coordination with mobile network operators.
  • An emergency hotline and official LINE account have been made available for residents requiring assistance.

Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued Cell Broadcast alerts warning residents in Mueang Phuket and Thalang districts of possible flash floods and landslides as heavy rain continues across the two areas.

On Wednesday (October 28), the DDPM warned that persistent heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods, rapid run-off, mudslides, overflowing waterways and localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, along rivers and streams, and on foothill slopes.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to move their belongings to higher ground, take precautions against electric shocks and look after vulnerable people. They are also advised to closely monitor official announcements and updates from relevant authorities.

The DDPM has coordinated with mobile network operators AIS, True and NT to distribute flood warnings through the Cell Broadcast system to people in Mueang Phuket and Thalang districts.

Those requiring assistance can contact their district chief, subdistrict headman, village headman, executives or council members of local administrative organisations, or community leaders.

Residents can also report emergencies or request assistance through the DDPM's official LINE account (LINE ID: @1784DDPM) or by calling its 24-hour disaster emergency hotline on 1784.
