Rescuers are searching for 38 trapped workers after a gas explosion at Liushenyu coal mine in China’s Shanxi province

At least eight people have been confirmed dead and 38 others remain trapped underground after an explosion at a coal mine in northern China, Reuters reported, citing China’s state news agency Xinhua.

Local emergency authorities said search and rescue operations were still under way after the blast at Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County, Shanxi province, on Friday night.

As of 6am on Saturday, 201 workers had been rescued and brought safely to the surface. A total of 247 people were working underground when the gas explosion occurred at 7.29pm on Friday.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

Chinese President Xi Jinping issued instructions after the explosion, ordering rescuers to make every effort to find and save the missing workers and ensure the injured receive full medical treatment.
