EMC eyes mid-tier data-storage market

EMC, A US-based provider of IT storage hardware, has announced a strategy to provide mid-tier products to the market, expecting to increase revenue growth from mid-range customers and small and medium-sized enterprises by about 25 per cent.

Tom Zack, president for Southeast Asia of EMC, said it would provide such products as VNX, a mid-tier storage solution, and Isilon, an NAS (network attached storage) solution for big data.
The firm spends 12 per cent of its annual revenue for research and development and an average of 10 per cent for technology acquisitions.
“We have a whole range of different products to support the customer’s needs. Information technology can be deployed in a wide range of business. In Thailand today, almost everybody is using e-mail and smartphones. Most people are also on Facebook, using the Internet as a way to share information and ideas,” Zack said.
“The foundation technologies are changing increasing in capacity. The emergence of flash technology is the next wave of innovation and EMC is moving to bring flash technology to the market.”
Nathakorn Potejanasaka, country manger of EMC Information Systems (Thailand), said International Data Corporation had forecast that the external-storage market this year would be worth Bt2.4 billion, with the high-end market accounting for 12.5 per cent and the mid-tier market the rest.
EMC expects that this year it will gain about 15 per cent of the external mid-tier market and become No 4 in the total market. It expects to revenue growth from external storage next year of about 25 per cent.

Rapid growth
External storage in mid-tier businesses is growing three times as fast as in the high end, spurred by departmental workloads and worker mobility. By 2017, it is estimated that in the Asia-Pacific and Japan market, smartphones will account for 25 per cent of mobile devices. The big-data storage infrastructure is in the cloud, which is delivered as a part of the infrastructure as a service. EMC expects half of its revenue this year to come from the enterprise market and half from the mid-tier market, but next year, it expects 65 per cent from the mid-tier sector, in which there are about 10,000 potential customers in Thailand.
