Stroke cure, bargain stocks among Thailand’s top 10 fake news stories

Fake news about government policy is dominating social media, but fake reports on the economy are receiving the most interest, the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry said on Sunday.

Of the 98 fake news items from October 28 to November 3, 64 were related to government agencies, followed by 16 on healthcare products and services, 12 on the economy and six on natural disasters, the ministry said.

However, fake news about the economy got more clicks and shares, said DES Ministry spokesperson Noppawan Huajaimun.

The top 10 fake news were:

• Food recipes for treating ischemic strokes (loss of blood supply to the brain).

• The Stock Exchange of Thailand inviting people to invest 1,000 baht in blue chip stocks.

• No new investments in Thailand for the past eight years due to Thai and foreign investors’ lack of confidence.

• Government Savings Bank (GSB) offering 100,000-baht loans with 700-baht monthly repayments.

• GSB offering 250,000-baht loans with 1,200-baht per monthly repayments via its MyMo app.

• Fried foods contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals from tissue paper.

• Energy Ministry forced to hike fuel prices after PTT delayed return of assets to the Finance Ministry.

• Krungthai Bank offering loans via SMS message.

• Thai Airways International recruiting ticket-sellers via an app and offering them 3,000 baht per day.

• Labour Ministry inviting people to apply for work-from-home jobs which pay 800-2,600 baht per day.
