Cambodia has deployed personnel to maintain security, safety and public order and protect the dignitaries who will be attending this week’s Asean summit, National Military Police spokesman Eng Hy said.

Speaking on Tuesday, Hy highlighted the need to protect the 40th and 41st Asean summits and related meetings, hosted by Cambodia.

“The purpose of the plans is to guarantee safety, security and public order. Officials from several institutions – as well as members of the armed forces – will be deployed across the capital to prevent potential threats or acts of terrorism to the delegates of the 32 countries which will attend,” he said.

He added that the military had prepared ambulances, fire engines and motorcycles for emergency use.

“The Phnom Penh municipal military has deployed about 1,400 personnel, in cooperation with local authorities,” Hy added.

He said the safety of visits associated with delegates to Preah Sihanouk and Siem Reap provinces would also be guaranteed.

In total, over 10,000 personnel from 14 units and institutions would be assigned to protective work.

“I urge all ministries, institutions, local authorities and all relevant personnel to unite to ensure the success of the summits. All citizens, please be patient should our security measures affect your travel,” he said.

Cambodia is set to host the 40th and 41st Asean summits and related meetings from Tuesday to Sunday, with 34 world leaders and international institutions in attendance.
