Myanmar launches people's military service training

TUESDAY, APRIL 09, 2024

On April 8, Myanmar commenced the first training program under the recently enacted People's Military Service Law.

The State Administration Council (SAC) information team confirmed that qualified volunteers gathered at designated regional military command headquarters for the training.

Opening ceremonies were held at local training schools with speeches delivered by the respective commandants. Regional and state chief ministers were also present to mark the occasion. Following the ceremonies, officials met with the trainees, offering words of encouragement and financial support.

The People's Military Service Law, passed in November 2010, officially came into effect on February 10, 2024. Since March 9, young people across Myanmar have been called upon to participate in this inaugural militia service training.

SAC spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun previously announced on March 27 that the first group of volunteers were self-described and primarily hailed from the Yangon Region.
