Belated winter expected next week in upper Thailand

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2023

Winter is arriving next week, says the Thailand Meteorological Department, acknowledging that there has been a delay this year.

A mass of moderate to relatively strong cold air was expected to descend from November 14 to 20, covering the upper parts of Thailand and bringing an increase in the intensity of cold winds during this period, the department said.

During this time, rainfall in the upper regions of Thailand would start to decrease. There may still be some rain during the initial phase when the cold air mass descends, particularly around November 16, but temperatures will drop subsequently, and strong winds will mark the onset of the colder season.

This would be a clear signal of the transition to winter during this period, emphasising the importance of planning and preparing for the cooler weather ahead, the department said.

Cold weather is expected in the mountainous areas and peaks, such as Doi Inthanon in the North, from November 17-19. Cooler air is expected in the plains. It was crucial to take precautions and prioritise health during these changing weather conditions, the department said.

In the southern region, starting from Chumphon province and further down, there would be a need to be cautious of heavy and continuous rainfall, coupled with an increase in strong winds, it added.
