Malaysian delegation discusses assistance for duped nationals

The envoy, Jojie Samuel, visited Mae Sot Police Station in Tak’s Mae Sot District to discuss the situation of foreign individuals deceived into working on the Myanmar side, particularly in ethnic minority areas opposite Mae Sot.

Following the meeting, the diplomatic team proceeded to the immigration checkpoint where the Tak immigration department provided a comprehensive briefing on foreigners, including Malaysians, who had crossed over to Myanmar.

The ambassador told the officers that he fully understood the challenges being faced and acknowledged the efforts of the relevant staff.

For their part, the Thai officials expressed their willingness to collaborate with the Malaysian Embassy to provide ongoing assistance to Malaysians who have fallen victim to deception.

Thai police have issued a warning to all foreigners invited to work in Myanmar through social media or online platforms, urging them to verify these opportunities with the authorities of their respective countries to avoid falling prey to deceit.

  Over the past 2-3 years, numerous cases have been reported of Malaysians being deceived into working on the Myanmar side, particularly in Myawaddy province. Enticed by recruiters with promises of high pay, these individuals have found themselves unable to return and endured abuse, violence, and confinement. While some managed to escape independently, others were forced to pay a high ransom, with relatives bringing substantial amounts of cash.

According to information from the Mae Sot Police Station, in 2023, 31 Malaysians were apprehended and faced legal proceedings under the Immigration Act. Within this group, some had been deceived into working on the Myanmar side and were compelled to illegally cross the Moei River back to the Thailand side.
