ZTE, a telecom-equipment manufacturer based in China, is bringing in its own brand of smart phones and hopes to join the Education Ministry's "one child, one tablet" scheme to penetrate the market here further.

Among the ZTE-brand models launched yesterday were the Racer II, Blade and V9. They will be distributed by Wireless Device Supply, an affiliate of Advanced Info Service.

Later Total Access Communication (DTAC), TrueMove and CAT Telecom will also offer more ZTE models, said Zhang Xiaoke, managing director of ZTE Thailand.

This year ZTE Thailand expects to sell 300,000-500,000 smart phones worth about US$20 million (Bt646 million) under its own brand and also other brands.

In 2011, ZTE’s global smart-phone shipments quadrupled to more than 12 million units and are expected to double in 2012.

Thakolrat Kaewkan, managing director of Wireless Device Supply, said the company targets revenue of Bt14 billion this year, up from Bt13 billion last year, and sales of 3.5 million handsets, up from 2.5 million last year.

This year the domestic mobile-phone market is forecast to expand to 17 million units from 14 million last year.
