Inquest on Wat Pathum Wanaram dead to open in June

The Criminal Court will on June 18 convene an inquest into the six deaths at Wat Pathum Wanaram in connection with the government crackdown on red-shirt protesters in May 2010.

“Prosecutors plan to call 104 witnesses to testify,” Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Maj-General Anuchai Lekbamrung said yesterday. He added that investigators had completed reports on all 18 deaths that are believed to have involved state officials.
Of the total 91 deaths, the Department of Special Investigation put 18 cases, which might be linked to the riot forces, in one batch. The DSI then sent the 18 cases back to police for forensic checks, paving the way for an inquest on cause and circumstances.
Anuchai said the court had already scheduled inquest sessions for 17 deaths, including the six in the compound of Wat Pathum.
The inquest on the 18th case should be scheduled soon as police have additional evidence to public prosecutors, he said.
