Manit Techa-apichoke, BMA deputy permanent secretary, said the festival of lights will run from Saturday December 1 to January 12, with the LED lights festooning the road, the BTS Skywalk and pedestrian overpasses in the area around the Gaysorn shopping centre.
The tunnel of light, 20 metres long and 16 metres wide, will be turned on nightly from 5.30 to 11.30 but on New Year’s Eve, the lights will stay on until 2am.
In addition, there will be performances by artists and musicians on Saturday as well as on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
“There are many famous hotels and malls in the Ratchaprasong area. His Majesty the King’s birthday, Father’s Day, Christmas and New Year’s are special events that people and tourists will come to celebrate and glorify,” Manit said.
The BMA expects that the light display will attract more than 16 million Thai and foreign tourists, who will spend Bt13 billion in the area.
Hotel occupancy there is expected to be at 90 per cent, Manit said.
