Two Lamboginis worth Bt74 million were seized for tax evasion by faulty declaration to custom officials, while three Mercedes Benzes, one Lexus Hybrid car and one Porch – all worth Bt34 million totally – were seized on charges of tax evasion and smuggling out of the bonded warehouse and duty-free area.
Another Mercedes Benz and two BMWs worth Bt21 million were seized on charges of tax evasion and smuggling into Thailand via Southern border.
Benja said the seizure resulted from the Custom Department’s investigation that found some private par-importing companies had wrongfully declared car models in a bid to avoid full tax payment while some smuggled cars into Thailand via the Southern border by pretending to be tourist then parking the cars for gangsters to pick them up.
Saying that the 10-car seizure were from the independent car importers, she said this seizure had nothing to do with the previous case in which six luxurious cars were burnt during transport in Nakhon Ratchasima and some politicians were said to be involved.
She added that the Custom Department was looking into other 4-5 cars that might be within the frame of tax evasion and would proceed legal action soon.
These law violations were punishable for a fine worth four times of the car’ value plus tax and/or a 10-year imprisonment.
