Pol Colonel Narat Sawettanant, chief of the Justice Ministry's Rights and Liberties Protection Department, yesterday paid Bt316,450 in compensation to a man for being wrongly detained in jail for 553 days.

Anukul Nithinusakorn, 36, had reportedly lost his national identity card and it was allegedly used by a gang to smuggle yaba.
The Criminal Court acquitted Anukul on grounds that there was enough evidence that he was at work at the time of the crime. His workplace requires a fingerprint scan for employees to clock in.
Anukul – who was given Bt111,000 in compensation for being wrongly detained, Bt105,450 for the loss of work opportunities and Bt100,000 for lawyers’ fees – said the Lawyers Council of Thailand took up his case to file lawsuits in civil and criminal courts, adding that Narat’s office would also help by asking the police to provide remedial assistance.
Separately, Narat also presented Bt370,800 to Sanoh Inphrom, 50, who was detained for 926 days but was finally acquitted because of the lack of evidence.
