The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) sent a letter on Sunday evening to all of the country's mobile phone operators and telecom service providers asking them to suspend the services immediately.
BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood confirmed the news, saying they took the step following instructions from the government.
Earlier, on November 18, the Bangladeshi authorities blocked Facebook, Whatsapp and Viber after a top court rejected the petitions of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Muhajid, who were hanged three days later for crimes during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan.
However, on December 10, the Bangladeshi government lifted the ban on Facebook, but did not unblock Whatsapp and Viber.
