They were registering for the upcoming referendum on the draft charter.
Online registration had been made available for voters from May 1 till the end of June at the http://election.dopa.go.th website. So far, more than 100,000 voters living outside their constituency have registered for the plebiscite, with as many as 70,000 doing so via this website.
Since Thursday was the last day for registration online, thousands of voters logged on at the same time resulting in the crash.
As of press time, Election Commission member Somchai Srisuthiyakorn said the website had been fixed.
Voters living outside their constituency have until July 7 to register at district offices across the country.
