German who cut up wife then holidayed in Thailand guilty of murder

Augsburg, Germany - A German man who killed his sleeping wife, cut the body up and hid it, and then went on a weeklong sex adventure holiday in Thailand was found guilty of murder in Germany on Thursday.

The 53-year-old man, whose name was not released by the court, will face life in jail. Because of the serious nature of the crime, he will not be eligible for parole after 15 years. Authorities said he will likely spend 20 years in jail.

The man, who comes from the southern German town of Friedberg, confessed to the crime at the start of the trial.

He told the court that he killed his wife as she lay sleeping in November 2015 by hitting her with a hammer and then suffocating her with a plastic bag. He told the court he had planned the crime long in advance.

Once he cut up the body, he preserved the parts in salt, packed them in boxes and took them to a rented storage unit in nearby Augsburg. He then used his wife's money to fly to Thailand.

He returned to Germany in January and was arrested in a hotel in the western state of Hesse, upon which he led police to the body, which the authorities had not been able to find.
