Hashtags #10goodthingsinmylife2016 on Facebook, #BestMemoriesOf2016 and #HappyNewYear rose to the top quickly on social media yesterday as people recalled events of the past year. They thanked and wished their family and friends a good year in 2017.

Many Thais posted how much they missed His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. A lot shared pictures of them queuing to pay respect to the late king at the Grand Palace.
The compilation of His Majesty’s greeting cards for Thais since 1948 was popular on timelines. Some versions came as pictures and text, while some came as a slide-show with songs composed by His Majesty.
“No more [greeting cards from King Bhumibol] from this year,” many wrote.
@longliveking9’s tweet of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s New Year Blessing for Thais last year was widely shared. It says “May you be blessed with physical strength, a firm and sharp mind always.”
@HappinessIsThailand, however, shared a story of children on Doi Ang Khang making greeting cards for King Bhumibol with the will to pass on happiness to others. It called on people to do good deeds and write about it, saying it is time for people to write blessings for His Majesty.
“Although this year Our Father is so far far away, we can send New Year greetings to him, because the best New Year greeting for him is seeing Thais share happiness as being the givers.”
Some people wrote about their New Year resolutions, donations and good things to do to celebrate the New Year.
Aobboon Yamsirikul shared how he felt happy about donating part of his bonus to the Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital and Mahidol University annually.
I-Mong Pattara Khumphitak praised the effort by a group of doctors and medical personnel who volunteered and went to help people in remote areas, saying “As good as Toon Bodyslam [the singer whose recent 400-kilometre charity run raised Bt63 million for a hospital in Prachuap Khiri Khan].”
Jack Sirirat-Usdorn posted a picture of him donating blood at the Thai Red Cross Society and wrote “Making merit at year end. Crowded here but it did not take long.”
Loads of pictures from around the country and many corners of the world were shared on timelines as people travelled and celebrated.
There have also been a lot of traffic and accident reports as well as warnings for people to travel safely.
Many organisations shared important phone numbers including 1137 and 1193 for traffic accidents, plus 1669 and 191 for rescue and emergencies, and 199 in case of fire.
Photography page Bag Pe Sa Pai Kong on Facebook launched a Let’s Go Home campaign, calling on people to go back and celebrate with their family in their home town, and then share pictures of how they enjoyed the time together.
@Rpa116207 wrote, “I am so happy, not because I enjoy travelling but because I take my family on a trip. They used to take me to trips, now my turn.”
Some people made fun of themselves for not travelling during the New Year break.
Thailand V2 posted a picture of mountains with a caption, “Is it only me who can’t go travel during New Year holiday?”
Maa Ja (Dog Please) page also shared a satirical drawing of a dog and an owner sharing envious looks at friends who enjoyed trips during holidays. A lot of people gave it a ‘Like’ or ‘Laughing Face’.
Some online users such as @GoiNat26 and Pattamon Bthird Pinpetch offered paper cards to friends who would be happy to receive them.
The Momentum posted a video clip “What defines 2016?” wrapping up what happened in Thailand and around the world. It concluded that people should be strong and move together, “Because in every great loss, there’s always hope.”
Chawapon Kanittasontorn said “Hey , this is a good clip. After watching it, I thought of the word ‘change’. I used to hate this word but as I grew up I learnt that we cannot avoid it. I also learnt how to handle it – we have to learn and handle it, to move on.”
