Rayong residents and schools around the country on Monday held rites to remember Sunthornphu, a late Thai poet recognised by Unesco as the “Shakespeare of Thailand”.

The government made June 26 Sunthornphu Day after Unesco honoured Sunthornphu with the recognition in 1986.
This year, the Rayong governor organised Sunthornphu Day celebrations at the poet’s statute from Saturday to Tuesday.
The Rayong native died in 1855.
His works have been widely adapted into cartoons, movies and songs.
June 26 is his birthday.
