New bikes must meet euro 4 standards

Officials of Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) on Wednesday (February 5) met with representatives from more than 40 motorbike manufacturers, including major producers Honda and Yamaha, informing them of the requirements of the euro 4 certification for new bikes. The new policy, effective March 29, requires all new products to meet euro 4 standards.
To help tackle the PM 2.5 dust and pollution problem, euro 4 requires a 50 per cent reduction of carbon monoxide emissions, from the euro 3 standards currently in use.
All producer were told to follow the new policy or face penalties.
In the event of a violation, the manufacturer and importer will be jailed for a period of not exceeding two years, a fine not exceeding Bt2 million or both, while the distributor will be imprisoned for a maximum of 6 months or a fine not exceeding Bt500,000, or both.
