2,101 new Covid-19 cases and 17 deaths reported
The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Sunday reported 2,101 new cases and 17 deaths over a 24-hour period.
Bangkok again led the list of most cases with 980, followed by 221 in Nonthaburi and 108 in Samut Prakan.
The fatalities included eight in Bangkok, three in Samut Prakan and one each in Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Phrae, and Chainat provinces.
Of the fatalities, eight were men and nine women. One of them was a dentist from abroad who had myocardial infarction and disease related to pneumonitis.
The ages of the deceased ranged from 34 to 99. All of them reportedly suffered from chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, etc. The source of infection was mostly found in the family or contact with a patient.
Of the 15 overseas travellers found positive in quarantine, 10 had returned from Papua New Guinea, India, Sudan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Germany, while five had crossed the border from Myanmar, Malaysia and Cambodia.
Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, the spokesperson of the CCSA, told a press conference that since January more than 15,000 people crossing the border had been arrested, mostly from Myanmar.
Meanwhile, 2,186 patients have recovered and been discharged in the last 24 hours.
As of Sunday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 83,375. Of these, 79,993 had been contracted locally, including 24,098 who were found via proactive testing, while 3,325 were returnees.
So far, 53,605 have recovered and been discharged, 29,371 patients are still in hospitals, and 399 have died.
According to Worldometer, as of 11am on Sunday, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 158.33 million (up by 783,019), 135.8 million of whom have recovered, 19.13 million are active cases (107,520 in severe condition) and 3.3 million have died (up by 12,882).
Thailand ranks 99th on the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 33.45 million, followed by India 22.3 million, Brazil 15.15 million, France 5.77 million, and Turkey 5.02 million.
Meanwhile, another 10,963 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, while 2,269 people were given their second shot, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in Thailand to 1,743,720.
