Thein Sein to push land reform

Myanmar's President Thein Sein pushed his reform in land management to meet growing demand for new economic development.

Thein Sein delivered his speech on the reform plans for national development at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw on June 19.

He said the country has problems such as the land use and the land speculation while other neighboring countries have better living conditions and better socio-economic status due to their better land management.

Myanmar has taken steps to implement the regional development plan, city development plan, township development plan and village development plan by forming committees at various levels, he said.

The President also stressed the need to have a land use policy and a systematic land use management in fulfilling the public requirements such as living conditions, food security, job creation, agriculture, industry, drinking water supply, transport, electric power supply, communications, health, education and trade.

He also said that the time has come to conduct land reforms so as to ensure sustainable environment, regional development, job creation, economic development and improved living standard.

The authority would allow new setting of towns and wards, allocating farmlands and giving opportunities to invest in growing trees, forests and perennial trees and establish commercial plantations, instead of allowing the people to make illegal settlements in forestry lands as well as vacant and virgin lands, he said.

The President made his speech in four parts; on the State budget; the foreign assistance and aids; the local and foreign investments instrumental to national development; and finally on electricity development.

Members of union level organizations, region and state chief ministers, and chairmen of self-administered division/zones attended the meeting.
