China tells Myanmar to settle mine dispute, as Suu Kyi seeks to intervene

China has requested that Myanmar find a way to allow the smooth operations of the Monywa Copper Mine Project, adding that it hopes all levels of Myanmar society will create a favourable environment for the project, based on respect for the laws and regula

The Chinese Embassy in Yangon said in its press release issued Friday that the project is a joint venture between business communities of China and Myanmar and will bring benefits to both sides.

Issues such as relocation, compensation, environmental protection and profit sharing... were jointly settled through negotiations by the two sides and meet Myanmar's laws and regulations, the statement added.
Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy Party, said on Thursday that she would like to intervene in the disputes between the locals and investors in copper mine project while meeting with the people in Kan Kone Village, Salin Kyi Township of Monywa district.
Many prominent persons have criticised as totally unacceptable the crackdown by riot police on protest camps using tear bombs and water cannons before the daybreak on the holy and sacred day of the Buddhists, the full moon day of Tazaungmone month on November 29.
Witnesses said the police used chemical weapons in the incident, which saw many Buddhist monks were injured. More than 50 persons were taken to the Monywa township hospital. A seriously injured monk was taken to Mandalay Public Hospital.
