80% of helmets sold in VN markets 'dodgy'

Up to 80 per cent of helmets sold at markets are substandard and would not protect a rider's head in an accident, a conference heard yesterday.

The conference on the quality of helmets, held by the Vietnam Red Cross and the Vietnam-based Global Road Safety Partnership, was part of the policy-making process on helmet standards.
Statistics from Hanoi-based Vietnam-Germany Hospital showed that 33.8 per cent of accident victims who did not wear a helmet suffered brain injuries, three times the rate than for accident victims who did wear one.
Up to 86 per cent of cases of brain injuries in the hospital were as a result of traffic accidents involving motorbikes.
