No salary raise for civil servants

No funds have been allocated to raise salaries for civil servants in the next fiscal year in the current draft of the budget bill, the deputy minister for finance and revenue told the parliament earlier this week.

Deputy Minister Dr Maung Maung Thein made the comment in response to a question from MP Ye Tun – who represents Hsipaw constituency in Shan State – on the matter.
“At a parliamentary budget meeting before the by-election on April 1, last year, we made a demand for a salary increase for civil servants due to high commodity prices. But the president promised to do so in the next fiscal year as this year he feared [it would contribute to] inflation and skyrocketing prices,” Ye Tun said. “We, therefore, want to know if a salary-increase plan is included in the budget bill being drafted?” he asked.
Maung Maung Thein also said the government was using fiscal and monetary tools to keep inflation in check. President Thein Sein hinted in his New Year message that civil servants might see a pay rise in the fiscal year beginning in April.
