Memorial to slain foreign reporters

Former war correspondents and photographers will this week dedicate a memorial and honour those who went missing or were killed during the war in Cambodia, an official said.

Men Saman, undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Information, said on Sunday the memorial was dedicated to the 37 foreign and Cambodian correspondents and journalists who died or went missing between 1970 and 1975.
The memorial will be inaugurated in front of Le Royal Hotel on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of Information Minister Khieu Kanharith, a statement said.
The minister will also accompany the journalists to Wat Po in Kampong Speu on Tuesday to see a Bodhi tree planted in 2010 for nine journalists who were killed in the province.
Among the foreign journalists who died during the war were 10 Japanese, eight French nationals, seven Americans and others from Switzerland, West Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, India, Laos and Australia, the statement said.
The journalists in Cambodia for the dedication previously worked for the New York Times, Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, United Press International, the Washington Post, Newsweek, Time/Life, Dispatch, CBS News, the Bangkok Post and the Far Eastern Economic Review.
