Japanese firms ready to invest in infrastructure

Japanese companies will have to invest in Myanmar's weak infrastructure sector first, Yoshio Nakamura, vice chairman for Keidanren told Eleven Media Group recently.

“We are quite worried about the infrastructure, because the country needs a more stable supply of power. Investments in the manufacturing sector will only be ready to enter after the infrastructure, such as power supply, roads, railways and water supply, are fixed first,” he said.
“Since huge sums are needed for the infrastructure, Japanese firms will need assistance
from the Japanese government,” he added.
Foreign investors eager to enter the country are concerned about the poor state of Myanmar’s infrastructure, sources from the foreign investors’ community say.
“It’s a problem that Myanmar is poor in communications and information technology as well as in infrastructure,” director of a consulting company for foreign investors said.
Yonekura went on to say that Japan is currently assisting Myanmar in projects to upgrade Yangon Port’s Inland Water Transport, Yangon City’s Environmental Development, building infrastructure for Thilawa Special Economic Zone and Smart Community.
