Khasi rebels blow up bridge by India border

Khasi Insurgents from the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) blew up a bridge in Tamu, the Myanmar border town with India last Thursday morning, the Information Ministry reported on its website.

The UNLF is an insurgent group in the state of Manipur in the northeast of India. The UNLF aims to establish an independent socialist Manipur. It was founded in November 1964.
The 80-metre-long wooden Nanthalet creek bridge, located about 32 km from Tamu in the northwest of Sagaing Region, was reportedly blasted by an explosive with the use of wires. The damage is was estimated at 30 million kyats (US$35,000) the ministry stated. However, it did not report if there were any casualties.
Authorities found a 65-metres of wire and three pieces of paper at the scene that said ‘May the UNLF live long. Kabaw Valley is only concerned with Manipur, not with Myanmar’ written in English.
The blast was reportedly carried out in retaliation for the authorities’ seizure of 96 sets of assorted arms owned by UNLF insurgents from a house in Sandaku Ward (3) in Tamu town on February 3.
The bridge is under repair by staff from the Public Works under the Ministry of Construction, the website reported.
