Two new border checkpoints

Two more checkpoints will be set up on the Myanmar-Thai border upon completion of the border's demarcation, the Border Trade Department said. Currently, there are six border checkpoints where goods are being traded.

“Now, [Myanmar] officials are measuring the border line. After that, the Mawtaung and Mese checkpoints will be opened,” Border Trade Department deputy director Nyunt Aung said.
Officials said the two new checkpoints – Mawtaung checkpoint in the Taninthari Region and Mese checkpoint in Kayah Region – would boost legal trade and cut down on smuggling. Trade with Thailand hit a record of US$515.46 million (Bt15.11 billion) during the fiscal year March 31, compared with $298.98 million the year before.
