Govt quick to deny new rumours on Facebook

President's Office spokesperson Ye Htut yesterday denied rumours circulating on Facebook that an official at Myanmar embassy in Indonesia was murdered and that government troops were killed last week in a class along the border with Thailand.

Ye Htut, who is also deputy information minister, used his Facebook account to inform the public that the rumours were false, saying he had been travelling so much recently that he did not have time to reply to emails individually.

Reason to clash
The rumour of the murder of an embassy official followed a clash between Myanmar and Bengali people at an immigration centre in Indonesia on Friday that left eight dead and 15 injured.
Thai media also reported over the weekend that Myanmar troops were killed during a clash along the border, but the report was quickly retracted.
